Fill a Child’s Bucket of Self-Esteem

Someone wisely once said, “Parents need to fill a child’s bucket of self-esteem so high that the rest of the world can’t poke enough holes in it to drain it dry.”
As parents, grandparents, mentors, or loving adults, we are called not only to Love, encourage, and spend meaningful time with our children, but also to help them understand the deep well of self-worth that God has placed within them.
When we nurture their God-given talents and affirm their abilities, we give their confidence wings to soar — not in pride, but in the assurance that they are wonderfully made by their Creator.
The Lord works through us as we help our children put on an invisible shield — the armor of God (Ephesians 6:11) — so that when the world comes with its harsh words or cruel moments, they are ready.
Just last week, I witnessed something that moved my heart. While coaching a youth sports team, I saw one girl speak sharply, even cruelly, to another player beside her. I was taken aback; I hadn’t expected such hurtful words. My instinct was to step forward, to intervene, to protect the wounded child.
But before I could take that first step, something remarkable happened. The young girl who had been spoken to so rudely lifted her head, stared straight ahead, took a deep, steadying breath — and shielded herself with grace. She didn’t lash back or crumble. Instead, she quietly turned away from the ugliness. It was clear her parents had instilled in her something precious: the confidence of faith, the ability to turn away from evil, and to stand strong under Christ’s protection.
This is what we aim for as we raise and guide the next generation — children whose buckets are so full of Love, faith, and assurance in Christ that no matter what the world throws at them, they will not run dry.
With you in Christ Jesus, Rev. Walker
