Good Story

They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their actions; they are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work. Titus 1:16
A pastor shares a story with me and I share it here with you, my friend. A hypocrite is universally disliked. The Chinese in their picturesque language have a symbol for hypocrisy that literally means ‘Goat’s head over dog meat.’ In the open markets of China, butchers display the head of the appropriate animal above the meat of that slaughtered animal. A dishonest merchant could take advantage of his customers by mixing similar appearing dog meat in with the advertised goat meat.
Paul uses very strong language to describe those whose claim to the Christian life is not consistent with their actions: “detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.” Other translations use such words as : “abominable” (KJV); “Vile” (PH); “worthless” (NASSBI); and “rotten” (TLB).
The Apostle goes on to say that they are “unfit for doing anything good.” The truth of this verse stated positively is that God expects consistency in our lives, that is, He looks for deeds which are consistent with the New Nature that He has built into us.
As genuine Christians we have a deep seated desire to honor and please the One whose gift of life eternal was so desperately needed and is so greatly appreciated. Let us praise God for our desire to please Him, and for the Provision of practical ways to express our faith.
