“When Jesus heard this, He said to him, ‘There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow Me.’” — Luke 18:22
A father and his young son were walking one morning when the boy asked about how electricity flowed through the wires on the poles.
“I don’t know,” replied the father, “I never really understood electricity.”
As they walked further, the boy asked about thunder and lightning.
“That’s a mystery to me too, son,” the father admitted.
Question after question came, and each time the father had no clear answer. Finally, the boy said, “Dad, I hope you don’t mind me asking so many questions.”
“Not at all,” the dad replied with a smile. “How will you ever learn if you don’t ask?”
The boy would one day realize that his father didn’t have all the answers, but he would also remember that his father encouraged him to keep learning. Over the years, they discovered joy together by asking questions and sharing what they learned. A wise parent nurtures curiosity and the love of learning.
In the same way, our children and loved ones will turn to us with questions about Jesus’ teachings. Luke 18:22 is one of those passages that sparks questions. Why would Jesus ask a rich man to give up everything? Because Jesus knew where his heart was. The man loved his wealth more than his Savior.
Jesus invites him into a deeper investment— to invest in the Kingdom of God. Not only by giving to the poor, but also by becoming a disciple. True treasure is not found in money but in mercy, grace, and eternal life. The man had the opportunity to learn the greatest lesson of all: that following Jesus brings riches beyond anything the world can offer.
May we nurture within ourselves and others a love of learning that leads to Christ—the One who is wisdom, truth, and life.
Prayer
Gracious Lord, give us a humble spirit that longs to learn from You each day. Teach us to treasure Your wisdom above wealth, and to follow You with hearts open to mercy and grace. Help us to encourage others in their questions and guide them to Your truth. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
