Renewed in the Evening Hours— (names the sacred moment when God meets us at the end of our strength)

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”Isaiah 40:29

Many of us grow especially weary in the winter evenings, when the sun sets so early and we find ourselves working, traveling, and finishing responsibilities in darkness. It may still be Epiphany in our souls—Christ’s light revealed and alive within us—yet the waning daylight can leave us feeling drained as we press on to complete what must be done, regardless of our fatigue.

Those who are particularly challenged by the early evening darkness are our emergency responders and law enforcement personnel. For them, tension, stress, uncertainty, and exhaustion are not occasional visitors; they are daily companions. Their service often requires alertness and courage at the very moments when the body and spirit long for rest.

In times of emergency, those entrusted with leadership are called to a higher level of commitment. Responsibility settles heavily on their shoulders, and they continue forward without pause because the needs before them are urgent and real. Even when physical, emotional, and spiritual disciplines are well tended, the ongoing demands can slowly deplete these reserves, and weariness sets in.

Into this very place of exhaustion, Isaiah speaks God’s gracious Word. He addresses all who are tired, downtrodden, and weak, and he offers us the Lord’s beautiful promise. First, God gives strength to the weary. Second, God increases the power of the weak. This is not strength we manufacture, but strength God freely provides.

When you are exhausted, our loving Heavenly Father pours new strength into your soul. The Holy Spirit grants a second wind—lifting you, renewing you, and breathing fresh life where fatigue has settled. And when you call out to Him in your weariness, Jesus gently wraps you in His peace, covering you with His holiness and speaking words of Life into your heart. In that sacred moment, He supplies the power you need to take the next step, to finish the task before you, and to do so in His Name—never alone, always upheld, and always loved.
