The Faith That Prepares Them

As we raise our children, much of our attention is given to the present moment—their schooling, sports, developing talents, and the daily rhythm of homework and responsibilities. Yet faithful parents also take time, especially in the quiet evening hours, to speak with the Lord about their children’s future. Open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we prayerfully participate in preparing our children and young adults for what lies ahead of them.
We are reminded that years before Timothy was ready to pastor, the Apostle Paul was already preparing him for battle, for witness, and even for suffering. In 2 Timothy 4:7, an older and seasoned Paul writes, “I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” These words were not only a reflection on Paul’s own life but a strengthening encouragement for Timothy’s service. It is the power of faith within you that makes you strong for faithful service to God.
Timothy’s witness places him within the unbroken line of those who serve our Lord, yielding themselves to holy love for others. When we live this way, the needs of another are lifted, because love is shared through you and me, and through our Christian community. From such a life also flows self-discipline and self-control—the marks of a well-balanced faith expressed in both our actions and our words. As Paul reminds us, “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7).
