When to Row

There’s a familiar saying: “If there is no wind, row.” It’s a reminder that when the winds of life don’t cooperate, we must rely on effort, persistence, and sometimes, sheer determination to move forward. Rowing a boat takes work. It becomes a bit easier if you catch a current or follow the path of small fish swimming in the same direction. But nothing compares to the strength and speed that comes when more hands join in. In life, too, it's wise to bring others alongside you—companions in faith and encouragement—because the journey is lighter when shared.
Still, how much better the journey becomes when the wind does blow.
Jesus speaks of another kind of wind—one far more powerful than anything nature offers. In John chapter 3, He teaches Nicodemus about the Holy Spirit. He says,
“Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:5–6).
Then He continues:
“Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit” (John 3:7–8).
In verse 8, the Greek word Jesus uses for wind is also the word for Spirit. It’s a sacred revelation: being Born Again means receiving the full anointing of the Holy Spirit. When this happens, you're no longer left to row in your own strength.
The Holy Spirit becomes the wind in your sails.
You are filled — astonishingly so — with the Living Presence of Jesus Christ. You are guided, empowered, and lifted in ways that human effort alone could never achieve. So when you find yourself rowing through life’s tough waters, remember: you don’t have to go it alone. Invite Holy Spirit to show the way. Trust in the wind of God to move you. And when that Divine breeze fills your life, the journey is no longer just about rowing—it becomes about soaring.
May the wind of the Holy Spirit always fill your sails as you guide others to Jesus. Rev. Walker
