A Powerful Act Of Trust

At times we have to say goodbye and Paul is our greatest example of how we do just that.  Paul’s friends in Ephesus have gathered to see him off.  He’s touched by the depth of their emotions as they say goodbye.  He tells that God is calling him to Jerusalem and saying goodbye to these wonderful friends is terribly difficult.  He has never liked the word ‘goodbye’ and he hesitates to use it even now.  So he gives them something better than ‘goodbye.’  Paul tenderly and personally tells them that he releases them into the fullness of God’s loving care.  “I commend you to God” he says.  (Acts 20:32)

Commend is a powerful act of trust.  We remember that just moments before Jesus breathed His last breath He released all of Himself to God.  He placed His full trust in God.  In those last seconds of life He prayed, “Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit.”  (Luke 23:46)  Just as He had done throughout His life, He once again entrusted His life fully to God.  Jesus shows us how to live each day.  When we entrust our life to God there is an inner peace that floods our souls.

There is an old church hymn named, ‘Trust and Obey.’  The third verse says:  But we never can prove the delights of His love, until all on the altar we lay; for the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows, are for them who will trust and obey.  His altar is where a candle is lit and the light reminds us of the light of Christ before us.  His altar is where our Bible lays because the holiness of those words bring us to Jesus.  His altar is anywhere we bow our head and say a prayer; when we commune with God.  We entrust our life to God at these times.

May His blessings continue to fill your life, Rev. WalkerI commend my High School friend, Terry Weeks, into the fullness of God’s Presence.  Terry went to Heaven on August 30th, 2026.  We will see you later Terry!  Christ be Praised!!
