In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:11-12
Upon noticing the football players' bomber jacket, the high school student found it atop a pile of coats. Curiosity led him to wonder how it would feel to wear his hero's jacket. Slowly and quietly, he slipped on the letterman's jacket, only to realize that his hero's shoulders extended far beyond his own, coming halfway between his shoulders and elbows.
As he removed the jacket, he acknowledged that his aspiration of playing first string seemed unlikely. Yet, in that moment, he discovered something of spiritual significance. Isn't it often the most ordinary individuals who become heroes in the Bible? Their limitations serve to underscore the power and faithfulness of God, who works through them to accomplish what they cannot.
Do we not recognize that God utilizes us in ways that surpass our abilities? He loves us and aligns our hearts with Christ. Indeed, spiritual achievements are not measured by the breadth of our shoulders. True spirituality is best gauged by the tender compassion that emanates from a heart filled with love for Jesus Christ.
