Each day at 3:00 a singing alarm goes off on my phone which causes me to thank Jesus for dying on the Cross for us. The song playing is ‘Oh How He Loves You And Me’ by the Heritage Singers. The Cross for Him was an excruciating amount of pain, both physical and spiritual. And as He dies He has us on His mind-- our wonderful gift of salvation, costing Him His all to give it to us!
Jesus dies between two criminals. The criminal on the cross next to Jesus recognizes Him as the Christ. No doubt, the criminals who hang on the crosses on either side of Jesus are vicious cold-blooded, heartless persons, who have no concern for honesty or fairness or truth. Criminals. But not Jesus. He is innocent of any crime at all, unless it’s a crime to be large-hearted with God’s pure Spirit flowing through your veins. He has no crime, He was very innocent.
With His heart filled with grief and pain, Jesus says, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” At this, something within the heart of the criminal on the cross next to Jesus changes. He pays attention to Jesus. He notices the difference in His dying. He takes in Jesus’ compassion for others and His strength to endure with God to the end.
When the other criminal on the other side of Jesus derides Him, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!” Then the changed criminal rebukes him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this Man has done nothing wrong.” And Jesus the Christ welcomes the changed criminal to Paradise.
Then he says, “Jesus, remember me when You come into your Kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43
