She Who Laughs Again

Years ago, someone dear to our family went home to be with the Lord far too soon. In the days that followed, something quiet but unmistakable changed in us: laughter disappeared. It wasn’t just sadness in the obvious sense—it was the absence of joy that used to surface so naturally in the ordinary moments of life.
We are people of the Resurrection. We believe Christ has conquered death. We trust in the promise that those who belong to Him are held securely in His Heavenly Presence. And yet, even with that faith, grief can still settle deeply into the places where joy once lived.
I remember noticing, after some time had passed, that what had changed most wasn’t only what we spoke about—it was that we no longer laughed. And I came to realize something I had not understood before: when laughter disappears in one place, it often disappears in others too, quietly and without announcement.
Have you ever seen that happen?
When I recognized it in my own home, I began to recognize it more easily in the lives of others I care about in Christ. And instead of overlooking it, I began to respond differently. When I sense that joy has gone quiet in someone, I pray more intentionally for the strengthening presence of the Holy Spirit. I try to stay near. I speak gently. I listen more carefully. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can offer is simply steady presence.
In time, something beautiful began to happen in our own family: laughter returned. Not all at once, and not in the same way it had been before—but it returned. And I came to see it as a quiet sign of healing, a mercy we did not manufacture but received.
There is a kind of restoration that only God can bring back into a human spirit. And often, it begins where grief once silenced joy.
The Psalmist gives voice to this kind of honest sorrow and hope:
“For I am poor and needy, and my heart is pierced within me.” (Psalm 109:22)
Yet the same Psalm moves toward trust in God’s saving help:
“Help me, O Lord my God! Save me according to Your steadfast love… Let them know that this is Your hand… With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord… For He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save them.” (Psalm 109:26–31)
Grief does not get the final word. God does.
And sometimes, one of the clearest signs that His hand is at work is not a dramatic miracle—but the quiet return of laughter where sorrow once settled in too deeply.
